Since becoming a founding brother of the Nu chapter of Phi Iota Alpha in the Spring of 1996, Giovanni 'El Dorado' Abril, has been active in many capacities within the fraternity, culminating with his election to the Board of Trustees during the 78th National Convention held in Dallas last summer
Brother Abril graduated in 1996 with a B.S. in Exercise Physiology with a Pre Med concentration from Boston University and moved to New York City where he was an active alumnus with the NYC alumni chapter and serving as secretary prior to relocating to Florida. Shortly after moving to South Florida, he served as the Pledge Master for the Founding line of the Upsilon chapter at University of Miami and Alpha Mu chapter at Florida State University, Assistant Pledge Master to Armstrong Atlantic State University Founding colony, and is currently assiting in expansion at other Southeast institutions. Brother Abril also served as the last National Secretary of the National Board and assisted as a member of the transition team for the current Corporate Structure development and through its unveiling and adoption. He rose through the Corporate Structure ranks, first as the Regional Director of the Florida Region, Governor of the Southeast Province and most recently, elected to the Board Trustees. Twice he has received the honor of 'Alumni of the Year' in 2001 and 2009 for his unwavering work for the fraternity.
Brother Abril, inspired by the heroism of the firefighters during the 9/11 tragedy, gave up his successful 8 year career in health care and pursued an Associate's Degree in Emergency Medical Services and became a career Firefighter in 2004. Currently he is a Firefighter-Paramedic for the Miami Dade Fire Rescue Department, and is part of the Hazardous Materials Team. He resides in a suburb of Ft. Lauderdale with his wife of 11 years and 9 year old son. He was born in Colombia and was raised in the U.S.
